HEALTH-CUBA: Free Sex Change Operations Approved
New horizons opened up for transsexuals in Cuba with the approval of a Public Health Ministry resolution that establishes guidelines for their health care, including free gender reassignment operations.

“It was just approved. The operations will begin to be carried out as soon as the Cuban medical team is ready to start,” Mariela Castro, head of the National Centre for Sex Education (CENESEX), told IPS.

Since 2004, Castro, President Raúl Castro’s daughter, has been the driving force in the effort to achieve integral health care for transsexuals in Cuba.

I have previously discussed Mariela Castro and I thank her deeply for this. You shouldn’t romanticize Cuba’s healthcare system; it’s a shambles, and there’s plenty of blame to spread between the US embargo and the Castro brothers’ poor governance. But, I congratulate them for taking a principled stand on this issue, and I only wish my country would follow.

(Of course, we’d need universal healthcare first. Mmm, about those Presidential candidates: one supports universal healthcare, one doesn’t. That is, Obama supports giving Americans the power to get help when they get sick. I’m voting for that guy.)

BBC NEWS | Americas | Castro champions gay rights in Cuba

There is a Castro who is fighting to introduce radical changes in Cuba.

Not the new president, Raul, although he has promised to push through “structural and conceptual” changes to this communist island in the Caribbean.

It is Raul’s daughter, Mariela Castro.

As head of the government-funded National Centre for Sex Education, she is trying to change people’s attitudes towards minority groups in the community.

She is currently attempting to get the Cuban National Assembly to adopt what would be among the most liberal gay and transsexual rights law in Latin America.

The proposed legislation would recognise same-sex unions, along with inheritance rights. It would also give transsexuals the right to free sex-change operations and allow them to switch the gender on their ID cards, with or without surgery.

That is… awesome.

I’m certainly no fan of the brothers Castro or the autocratic post-revolutionary regime. I can say, however, that this woman kicks ass.
