Awesome Transsexuals: Part 5

Transgender Talk Show Host Tackles Taboos in India : NPR

India may be the home of the Kama Sutra, but for years frank talk about sex has been utterly taboo.

Lately, however, a transgender talk show host is changing the boundaries of dialogue. In recent episodes of her show Ippadikku Rose, Rose has tackled workplace harassment, divorce, premarital sex and the benefits of legalizing prostitution.

“I want to break the big myth that they have by being a highly educated, highly articulate, sociable transsexual person who is talking about social issues — their own concerns,” Rose says.

Ohmygodohmygodohmygod. This woman is my new hero!

By the way… I don’t know where it was, but I read another article about her a while back that mentioned that, going into adulthood, she had trouble learning to tie a sari correctly, because she never went through a “proper” girlhood and never learned how. I can’t tell you how deeply I identified with that… in America, of course, it’s other stuff, like learning how to use makeup and cook. I still feel sort of an inferiority complex around that, ’cause I never had a “normal” girlhood and never had girlfriends growing up.

But, life is what you make of it, right? God made me transsexual, and I have to live with that.

  1. Girls learn to cook growing up? Is it just me, or is it fifties in here? My brother learned to cook just like I did: 4H.

  2. 😛 _Fine._ I suppose now, _nobody_ learns to cook in school in America, because it distracts from drilling for tests on subjects ten grades below you. But, come on, women, by and large, grow up learning to be good housewives, while men growing up learning how to subsist on frozen waffles and ramen noodles. So, I stand by my assertion that transsexual women are screwed in this respect: we get the societal expectation, but not the requisite training.

That said, I like to cook. I just don’t know how to cook a damn thing, and all the non-credit cooking classes at PCC were “party dishes to wow your friends” and other nonsense. I wish that just once I had taken home economics in school. But, oh, wait, I forgot, I went to a hippie school that thought children learned best by osmosis. $^%@^#!

I guess what I mean to say is that I like feeling like a housewife, but I don’t yet have the mad skillz to accommodate this leaning. So, if you see a bag of housewifey mad skillz lying around–decorated with frilly pink lace and a spiked collar, I’m sure–please bring it to me. Thank you.
